Mark Kelly in Exclusive Fox News Interview on Gun Control: 'NRA Needs to Listen to Its Membership on Universal Background Checks'

Mark Kelly, the husband of former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords who was shot in a rampage in Arizona, spoke to Fox News Sunday in an exclusive interview.

Kelly is pushing for tighter gun control and said he believes there is room for compromise. He told Chris Wallace that the mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut has changed the gun control debate.

“One thing that is different now is the fact that we had 20 first graders murdered in a classroom, along with six educators. I mean, that’s unacceptable and the American people, you know, want something done.” Kelly is pushing for the Senate to include universal background checks in their legislation. “Any bill that does not include a universal background check is a mistake. It’s the most common sense thing that we can do to prevent criminals and the mentally ill from having access to weapons.” A recent poll found that over 90 percent of Americans do support it.

Kelly noted that 74 percent of National Rifle Association members support universal background checks as well. “I would hope at some point that the leadership of the NRA would just listen to their membership on this issue.”

Recently, Kelly purchased two guns, including an AR-15 assault rifle, at an Arizona gun store to demonstrate how easy they were to purchase. Wallace noted that the shooter in Arizona, Jared Loughner, also passed a background check.

Kelly responded, “This information on [Loughner’s] mental illness that caused him to get expelled from community college should’ve been in the system. His admitted drug use to the U.S. Army who rejected him, that should’ve been in the system. […] If we improve the system, he would’ve been rejected from buying the gun in a gun store.”
