Israel Strikes Syria as Obama Contemplates Red Lines
New threats from Syria are coming hours after Israel reportedly launched an airstrike that targeted Syrian weapons. The weapons were supposedly headed for Hezbollah, a US-designated terrorist group. If the reports are true, it would be the second Israeli airstrike in three days.
Meanwhile, the Obama administration is deciding how it should respond to mounting evidence that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad used chemical weapons on his people. President Obama had called that move a “red line.”
During an interview on Telemundo, President Obama said he “doesn’t take any options off the table.” However, he said he doesn’t see a scenario where American troops on the ground would make sense.
On Fox News Sunday, Senator John McCain criticized the president for drawing red lines in the first place. He added, “The red lines were a green light to Bashar Assad to do anything short of that.”
