Utah Referee Punched By Soccer Player Dies, Police Say
“It’s just not fair. He was a really loving person.” -Daughter of Ricardo Portillo
A Utah referee is dead after a 17-year-old soccer player punched him in the face, according to police. The player apparently punched 46-year-old Ricardo Portillo for fouling him during a recreational soccer game. He fell into a coma and died Saturday night. The teen is in juvenile detention on suspicion of aggravated assault, and police are considering additional charges.
Portillo’s daughter said even if the teen spends the rest of his life in jail, “It’s not enough; they’re not going to bring my daddy back.”
