McCain: 'Hard to Believe Low-Level IRS Agents Were Responsible'

The Arizona senator was asked why he has avoided the word "lie" in describing President Obama's comments on Benghazi.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) weighed in on the scandals facing the White House, saying the "disgraceful" actions of the IRS seriously damage the American public's view of government.

"Those responsible need to be punished. It's hard for me to believe this was just a bunch of low-ranking apparatchiks that have been doing this," said McCain.

Boehner: Who's Going to Jail for This?

Bill Hemmer noted that in 2010, a midterm election year, several Democratic senators were openly calling for the IRS to take a look at the tax-exempt status of Tea Party groups that were supporting Republican candidates.

"The tea parties are grassroots organizations, they're not big lobbying outfits here in Washington, they're not well funded. And of course they're the most easily intimidated. So this is particularly egregious," said McCain.

What about President Obama's harsh words for the GOP over Benghazi?

"The president did not tell the American people the truth," said McCain, pointing out that the Washington Post's fact-checker has gave the president "four Pinocchios" after his statements Monday on Benghazi. Hemmer asked why McCain was not using the word "lie."

"I've never used that word, Bill, because he is the President of the United States. ...  You've got to remember it was part of the presidential narrative about Al Qaeda is on the run, bin Laden is dead, not to worry."
