Ingraham Goes After Sen. Rubio: Stop Dividing GOP on Immigration!

In a spirited debate on immigration, the radio host told the Florida senator her listeners have no faith that DHS will secure the border.

As seen on Fox and Friends

On Fox and Friends this morning, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) joined Laura Ingraham to discuss the DOJ and IRS scandals, but the conversation took an interesting turn when the topic moved to immigration reform. Conservatives have expressed dismay over the Gang of Eight's proposal for a revamped immigration system, saying it is a form of amnesty and must come with a plan for enhanced border security.

Rubio said he's optimistic that a deal can be reached, but acknowledged that the current proposal cannot make it through Congress. He said 90 percent of the bill is non-controversial, and reiterated that it's just a "starting point" toward reforming the system.

Ingraham, however, told Rubio that based on responses from her audience, conservatives have no faith that the border will be secured, pointing out that when Democrats like Chuck Schumer, Dick Durbin and Bob Menendez are "giddy" over a bill being passed, "most people in the middle class who are seeing their wages stagnate or go down have something to worry about."

"It's time to stop dividing the Republican party on this issue, with all your good intentions, and I know you have them. You're a terrific person, but people want us to focus on jobs, the economy and raising the middle class lifestyle and the wages here, in this country, before we start tackling an issue with this comprehensive approach," said Ingraham, calling it "tricky business" for DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano to be given "all this discretion" in the immigration bill.

Rubio countered that the failing legal immigration system is an economic issue and would still be a big problem even if there weren't about 11 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. He said the lack of an adequate system is a big reason why so many people come here illegally.

Ingraham responded that these things should be worked on in separate bills, and said what Rubio is referring to "is not a top priority for this country."
