‘There Was Harmony in That House’: Cleveland Kidnapper Defends Himself at Sentencing

Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro spoke earlier at his sentencing hearing, claiming that there was “harmony” in the house where he kept three women hostage for nearly a decade.

He argued that a “sexual problem” that began because he was the victim of sexual abuse as a child prompted him to kidnap the girls. “People are trying to paint me as a monster, and I’m not a monster. I’m sick.”

Castro tried to prove that in actuality he is a good person by citing the fact that he was both a musician and a school bus driver. He also stressed that he was a good father to the young girl he fathered with Amanda Berry. “She never saw any violence going on at that house, your honor. If anyone was to question her, she’ll say the opposite. She’ll probably say, ‘My dad is the best dad in the world.’”

Castro said that he is not a violent person, and in fact that the sex in the house was consensual. “I simply kept them there without them being able to leave.”

He argued that the women’s behavior since being released proves that he didn’t torture them. “There was harmony in that home,” he proclaimed.

He apologized to the victims, saying, “You guys know all the harmony that went on in that home.”
