DETAILS: Former Army Captain to Receive Medal of Honor

The White House announced that a former Army captain will be the sixth living person to receive the Medal of Honor for heroism in Iraq or Afghanistan.

William D. Swenson will receive the nation's highest military honor from President Obama on Oct. 15 for his bravery during a Sept. 2009 firefight in Kunar Province in northeastern Afghanistan.

Swenson was serving as a mentor and trainer embedded with Afghan security forces when the contingent was ambushed by Taliban fighters near the Pakistan border.

The Seattle native has already received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal.

Marine Cpl. Dakota Meyer was already given the Medal of Honor for his bravery during the same battle, which lasted six hours in the Ganjgal Valley. Five Americans and nine Afghans were killed while dozens were wounded, including Swenson and Meyer.
