What Happens If the Government Shuts Down?

It's a question many people are probably wondering today: what will happen at midnight if Congress fails to pass a bill to avert a government shutdown?

Martha MacCallum went over the scenario with FBN's Stuart Varney, who said that for the average American, nothing is going to change.

You won't be able to do things like go to the Smithsonian or national parks, or visit a passport office, and around 800,000 federal workers will be furloughed. But Medicare and Social Security checks will still go out as scheduled, post offices will be open and active duty military will stay on the job.

Varney said the far more important deadline is October 17, which is when the debt limit would be breached.

"On October the 17th, we lose the authority to borrow more money. Midnight tonight, we've lost the authority to spend more money. Borrowing it is far more important," said Varney.

For more from Stuart, check out Varney & Co., weekdays on Fox Business Network at 9:20a ET!
