Rubio: 'Sebelius May Have to Resign Over Lost Credibility'

After a 16-day government shutdown, President Obama is pushing a new agenda for the rest of 2013 while Republicans argue over the best strategy to deal with him. Florida Senator Marco Rubio (R) was one of the 18 senators who voted against the budget deal that reopened the government.

Today on Fox News Sunday, Sen. Rubio told Chris Wallace, “Let me be clear: I never was in favor of shutting down the government. […] The only thing I didn’t want to see us waste any more money on is ObamaCare, which is already proving to be a disaster.”

“The American dream is under assault,” Rubio said. “This can’t be the new normal.”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said another government shutdown is “off the table.” Wallace asked Rubio if McConnell is wrong. He responded that in order to enact change, the Republican Party needs to unify. “I think moving forward for us, the question is are there any lessons from the last three weeks that we can use so that in the future we’re more successful at achieving results.”

Rubio said he supports McConnell’s reelection in the Senate against a Tea Party challenger. “At the end of the day, he has done a good job at being a leader of the Republican conference.”

There are growing calls for Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to testify on Congress about the ObamaCare sign up glitches. “[Sebelius’] refusal to testify and be transparent about it I think is undermining her credibility,” Rubio said. “There may come a point where in fact she will have to resign largely because she no longer has the credibility to do the job.”

Rubio said it will be difficult for the president to negotiate immigration reform with the GOP based on the last three weeks. Hear more in the Fox News Sunday interview, above!
