UPDATES: VA State Senator Hospitalized After Stabbing, Son Dead

Virginia State Senator Creigh Deeds is in critical condition at the University of Virginia Hospital after being stabbed.

Deeds' son, Gus, was found dead of a gunshot wound inside the home.

UPDATE 4:00p ET: Gus Deeds was reportedly undergoing a mental health evaluation on Monday. He was supposedly released because there were no available beds in the Western Virginia area. Read more details here.

UPDATE 3:30p ET: Corinne Geller of the Virginia State Police briefed the media for the second time today, saying Deeds is now in fair condition at UVA Medical Center. Geller would not confirm that Deeds' son shot himself, but said "based on the evidence we have right now we are looking into this as an attempted murder and suicide."

Geller said she cannot comment on the reports about Gus Deeds' mental health evaluation on Monday, citing state privacy laws.

UPDATE 2p ET: Doug McKelway reported some new details on the situation on The Real Story. McKelway cited new reporting from the Richmond Times-Dispatch, stating that Deeds was able to escape from his home despite his severe stab wounds. He reportedly walked down a road from his house and was picked up by a cousin.

Deeds' son had been held for a mental health evaluation Monday under an emergency custody order, according to the report. He was released after four hours when officials could not find an available bed for him in western Virginia.

Deeds and his son were the only two people in the home when the attack occurred.

UPDATE 12:30p ET: Corinne Geller of the Virginia State Police briefed the media moments ago on the incident. She said the investigation is focused on establishing a motive for the attack and the sequence of events that occurred inside the home. Geller confirmed that Deeds was stabbed multiple times about the head and upper torso and that Deeds' son died from a gunshot wound at the scene.

Geller refused to comment on Deeds' condition, only saying he suffered serious injuries. She also did not confirm whether Deeds' son committed suicide. Geller said she hopes to release more details later this afternoon.

Watch the presser:

UPDATE 12p ET:  Steve Centanni reported that law enforcement is expected to brief the media on the incident soon.

UPDATE: 10:50a ET: Governor Bob McDonnell issued the following statement on Senator Creigh Deeds.

"In this tough and sad time, our thoughts and prayers are with the Deeds family. The news from this morning is utterly heartbreaking. Creigh Deeds is an exceptional and committed public servant who has always done what he believes is best for Virginia and who gives his all to public service. He cares deeply about Virginia, and the people of Virginia care deeply for him. I urge all Virginians today to join me in praying for a full and complete recovery for Creigh and for many more years of his public service to the Commonwealth. At this moment, our state unites in prayer for Creigh Deeds and his family."

UPDATE 10:43a ET:  Virginia Democratic sources are saying that Deeds was stabbed by his 24-year-old son Gus, and that his son then shot himself at their home in Bath County, Virginia.

In 2009, Deeds ran for governor of Virginia.
