Lowering the Bar? NM Wants to Relax High School Graduation Standards

New Mexico lawmakers want to lower the bar for high school graduates. The state already has one of the lowest graduation rates in the country.

The new plan establishes two kinds of diplomas – the current diploma of “excellence,” and a “general” one.

The lowered requirements for a general diploma include three math credits instead of four. It also relaxes standardized testing by letting school districts independently set passing grades.  

The New Mexico Public Education Department said in a statement: “Any attempt to lower standards for students is cause for concern. Today, too many of our high school graduates require remedial courses once in college so lower standards will not help.”
