Lawsuit Seeks Cash for Community Service in NYC Criminal Cases

A class-action lawsuit claims that people in New York City who perform community service to dismiss low-level crimes should be paid for their work.

The suit, by Brooklyn attorney Andrew Stoll, says the city is unlawfully exploiting people for free labor, comparing it to unpaid internships.

“The city saves, at the least, many thousands of dollars a year in labor costs utilizing their free labor … the bottom line is that it’s exploitation,” Stoll says in the suit.

In an adjournment in contemplation of dismissal, defendants in misdemeanor cases are to stay out of trouble for six months to a year, and in some cases, they are required to complete community service.

Stoll argues that laborers should be paid minimum wage.
