'OTR' Exclusive: U.S. Marine Tells Harrowing Story of His Arrest, Imprisonment in Mexico

Greta Van Susteren spoke to Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi, the United States Marine who has been held in a Mexican prison for two months. The 25-year-old claims that he mistakenly crossed the San Diego border into Mexico.

Tahmooressi told Greta that he left his truck in a parking lot and headed to Tijuana around noon on March 31st.

“I crossed over the border and […] I walked around, I looked at the shops, I checked in at a hotel over there because I was thinking to stay the night.”

After eating in a restaurant, Tahmooressi said he checked out of the hotel because it was dirty and dark. When he decided to head back to the U.S., he said he took a wrong turn and ended up at the Mexican checkpoint.

He described telling the Mexican border patrol officers that he had three guns in his truck and that he didn’t mean to end up at the checkpoint. That’s when Tahmooressi says he was told an escort vehicle would take him back to the American border. Instead a military cop came over, and according to the Marine, he was presumed guilty of a crime from that point on.

“They were threatening to take my guns, take my truck and take all my possessions. And I told them, I said, ‘hey, take everything you want. Just let me go back to America.’ They put me under arrest and that was pretty much it,” he said.

After that, Tahmooressi called 911 because he felt like he was in danger. He was handcuffed and taken to a doctor before going to a holding room and eventually he was taken to a prison.

This past week, the Marine appeared in court and met the judge who will be presiding over his case. He has not heard when his next court hearing will be held.

Tahmooressi hopes that he’ll be released within the next month. “That’ll be fantastic,” he added.
